Table availability

Verifies the availability of a table in the database using a simple row count.

PROBLEM

America’s Health Rankings provides an analysis of national health on a state-by-state basis by evaluating a historical and comprehensive set of health, environmental and socioeconomic data to determine national health benchmarks and state rankings.

The platform analyzes more than 340 measures of behaviors, social and economic factors, physical environment and clinical care data. Data is based on public-use data sets, such as the U.S. Census and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), the world’s largest, annual population-based telephone survey of over 400,000 people.

Here is a table with some sample customer data. When working with a large dataset, it's common to have multiple tables within it.

However, it is important to ensure that these tables are available and actually exist. This can be achieved using a table availability check, which helps ensure that the necessary data is readily available for analysis.

Typical table availability issues are: - the table does not exist because it has been deleted, - the table is corrupted and cannot be queried, - the database is down or is unreachable, - database credentials are incorrect, - access rights to the table have changed.

In this example, we will verify table availability in database using a simple row count.

We want to verify that a query can be executed on a table and that the server does not return errors, that the table exists, and that there are accesses to it.

SOLUTION

We will verify the data using profiling table_availability check. Our goal is to verify that table availability check failures do not exceed the set thresholds. In this check, you can only get two values in the result 1 or 0. If you get a value of 1, it means the table is fully available and exists, so the result is valid.

However, if you receive a value of 0, then there is a problem, and you need to run this check again after fixing the issue with the table. The number of failed attempts are failures, which we set in thresholds.

In this example, we will set three maximum failure threshold levels for the check:

  • warning: 1
  • error: 5
  • fatal: 10

VALUE

If the number of failures will exceed 1, a warning alert will be triggered.

The YAML configuration file stores both the table details and checks configurations.

In this example, we have set three maximum failures thresholds levels for the check:

  • warning: 1
  • error: 5
  • fatal: 10

To execute the check prepared in the example using the graphical interface:

Navigating to a list of checks

  1. Go to Profiling section.

  2. Select the table or column mentioned in the example description from the tree view on the left.

  3. Select Advanced Profiling tab.

  4. Run the enabled check using the Run check button. Run check

  5. Review the results by opening the Check details button. Check details

  6. You should see the results as the one below. The actual value in this example is 1. The check gives a valid result (notice the green square on the left of the name of the check).

  1. After executing the checks, synchronize the results with your DQO cloud account sing the Synchronize button located in the upper right corner of the graphical interface.

  2. To review the results on the data quality dashboards go to the Data Quality Dashboards section and select the dashboard from the tree view on the left. Below you can see the results displayed on the Current table status by dimension dashboard showing results by connection, schema, dimension and data group.

To execute the check prepared in the example, run the following command in DQO Shell:

You should see the results as the one below. The number of failures is 0 and the check gives valid result.

For a more detailed insight of how the check is run, you can initiate the check in debug mode by executing the following command:
